School Signs Technical Specifications

School signage needs to consider more than just appearance. Depending on the application and location, signage may need to meet specific accessibility, safety, construction, and education-sector requirements.

At SWS Signage, we work to ensure our school signage projects meet the relevant requirements and guidelines, including the NSW Educational Facilities Standards and Guidelines (EFSG), Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA), National Construction Code (NCC), and AS 1428.1 – Design for Access and Mobility, where applicable.

Braille and tactile signage, for example, has specific requirements relating to the size, shape, layout, formation, colour, materials, and placement of the signage.

Where required, braille signage must be positioned between 1200mm and 1600mm above finished floor level and installed on the latch side of the door, with the leading edge of the sign positioned between 50mm and 300mm from the architrave. Where sufficient wall space is not available, signage may be installed directly on the door within the approved height range.
